About the inn

Ullikana is a secluded, romantic haven by the sea in the heart of Bar Harbor, Maine. Old-fashioned gardens surround this historic English Tudor style house built in 1885, one of the few early cottages still remaining in Bar Harbor. All of our rooms have private baths, and many have fireplaces or private terraces with beautiful water views.

Alpheus Hardy, a china trader from Boston and Bar Harbor's first summer cottager, built and named Ullikana in 1885. Unfortunately he never told anyone who or what Ullikana was. The name’s meaning remains a mystery: a flower, a bird, an enchanted island, a spirit or perhaps a beautiful woman. Today, however, Ullikana has come to mean the gracious hospitality of an elegant bed and breakfast maintaining a long tradition of hospitality and welcoming guests and travelers from around the world.

Although only a minute from the center of downtown, our quiet location offers a haven of hospitality. Start your day with sumptuous homemade breakfast next door at Bass Cottage Inn. Relax in the afternoon on the Ullikana terrace, and watch the ships in the harbor.
